Branches hit my face, sending blood down my cheeks. Every one of my pores (毛孔) was filled with sweat, but I couldn’t stop. They were close behind. I could not, I would not go back. They only saw my black skin and did not know of the human soul that lived under by flesh.

The sound of the dogs came closer. I hid myself in the shadows beneath the trees above me, thankful for the first time for my black skin. My bare feet bled. The moonlight threatened to give me away. Its brightness seemed to make fun of me as I ran. Even the moon was white. The whole world seemed to be made for people with a white surface. Suddenly I fell down to the forest floor. My legs begged me not to make them run. I ignored them and desperately tried to escape and run away from these evil people, the moon, and my own dark skin.

It was a failed attempt. I had hardly ran ten steps when the dogs’ teeth were in my face. Tears burned my face, tears of anger, hate, and fear. “Please!” I begged. “Please let me go!” My breath was short, and my whole body was filled with blood. I stopped for breath. “Actually we’re all the same! That’s what really matters! Please let me go.”

“Let you go?” a man laughed. “How could it be? You were born to serve us.” They laughed as they marched along, pulling me by a long rope like a dog. I was exhausted after running for days and I could feel that blood was flowing down my body. At last, I fell down in the grass, covered with blood. My soul moved away from my body and I was free at last.

Harvard researchers have created a tough, low-cost, biodegradable (可生物降解的) material inspired by insects' hard outer shells. The material's inventors say it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic(塑料). The material, made from shrimp ('虾) shells and proteins produced from silk, is called "shrilk." It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.

A major benefit of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic's toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and '60s. Decades later, however, plastic's very durability (耐用性) is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. What is the point of making something that lasts 1,000 years?

Shrilk not only will degrade in a landfill, but its basic components are used as fertilizer(肥料), and so will enrich the soil.

Shrilk has great potential, the inventors said. Materials from which it is made are plentiful in nature, found in everything ranging from shrimp shells, insect bodies to living plants. That makes shrilk low cost, and its mass production possible should it be used for products demanding a lot of material.

Work on shrilk is continuing in the lab. The inventors said the material becomes flexible when wet, so they're exploring ways to use it in wet environments. They're also developing simpler production processes, which could be used for non-medical products, like for computer cases and other products inside the home. They're even exploring combining it with other materials, like carbon fibers, to give it new properties.

  63. Paragraph I of the passage is mainly about shritk's_____.

  A. remarkable design B. interesting name

  C.???basic elements D. major features

  64. What has become a concern about plastic?

  A. Using it properly. B. Producing it cheaply.

  C. Developing its properties quickly. D. Evaluating its contributions fairly.

  65. According to the inventors, shrilk has great potential partly because_____.

  A. it can help plastic degrade

  B. it can be found in living things

  C. its raw materials are abundant in mature

? ?D. its mass production has been realized???

  66. What are the inventors doing in the lab?

  A. Testing ahrilk's use in wet conditions.

  B. Replacing carbon fibers with shrilk.

  C. Making shrilk out of used household goods.

  D. Improving shrilk's flexibility for medical purposes.

  67. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

  A. A Possible Alternative to Plastic

  B. Benefits of Insects in Scientific Research

  C. The Harm of One-time Products

  D. Recent Progress in Environmental Protection

  D

The blockbuster film Titanic has brought millions of dollars and thousands of people to the theaters and continues to touch people today in their homes. Why is this film so successful? It is a combination of many different things. Among these are many different elements. Looking at some of these elements will show how the director and others involved were able to create an emotionally charged movie that appealed to millions.

The film uses one thematic(主题的) element called The Truth of Human Nature. The two main characters seem to represent noble people. Most of the other characters in the film are shown as non-tolerant, rude and cold-hearted people. The element of focusing on the two main characters' love and emotion seems symbolic of an ideal state.

There are also social problems addressed. This is done in a few different ways. The most noticeable way is that the lower class people remain locked in the basement as the ship goes down. Throughout Titanic, the lighting is very important. The poor, lower class people are always shown in very warm-coloured light that gives them a sense of life and happiness. On the other hand, the rich, upper class are always shown in a flat light portraying the feeling of hardness and coldness. By using these techniques, they show the issue of class segregation(种族隔离), and they create stereotypes. The main characters are able to break free of these stereotypes and be together. This is the solution to the segregation problem.

As you can see, Titanic took a lot of thinking and preparation to film in a manner that would create emotion and bring to the surface the issues and story of the great ship.

  68. The underlined word “blockbuster” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.

  A. something very successful

  B. a highly explosive bomb

  C. something worth a lot of money

  D. a touching story

  69. Why were different colours of light used in the film Titanic?

  A. The director was determined to achieve good visual effect.

  B. They were used to show the difference between the rich and the poor.

  C. The social status was represented by the color of light in the past.

  D. The use of light was the main technique the director made use of.

  70. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. The segregation problem in the society can be solved by using the light.

  B. Because of the director's talents, the film Titanic achieved great success.

  C. Though love is the main theme of Titanic, it also reflects some social problems.

  D. In the film Titanic there are two characters altogether.
