皇企鹅是唯一在南极大陆沿岸过冬的鸟类，并在冬季繁殖。雄性皇企鹅为了呵护雌企鹅产下的卵，会在随后的两个月或更长时间内不吃不喝，全心尽力用自己的身体给后代取暖。孵卵时，雄企鹅将卵放在两脚的蹼上并用肚皮盖住，在这其间，雄企鹅的体重将减轻11公斤。
